Publication of an article on the Extra-ordinary music camp in the Revue des sciences de l’éducation.

February 21, 2025

Jean-Philippe Després and Marie-Claude Mathieu, collaborators on the Musicking Through Life project, published, in collaboration with Francine Julien-Gauthier and Flavie Bédard-Bruyère, the article “Extra-ordinary music camp. Environmental factors and perceptions of parents, children, and facilitators”. This article was published last January in the Revue des sciences de l’éducation.

In the summer of 2020, 25 young people aged 8 to 17 and living with an intellectual or physical disability participated in the “Extra-ordinary Music Camp”. This is a research project studying the impact of a program based on an informal distance learning approach to music. For this qualitative study we used participatory research methods.

The results reveal that, according to the participants’ point of view, the activities of the Extra-ordinary Music Camp facilitated the access of young people to recreational activities, despite there being various obstacles. In doing so, the Music Camp allowed the youth to show initiative, develop self-determination, express creativity, and experience successes.
